Crypto without costly mistakes
New York / U.S. beginner path. Ten short lessons, fictional practice first, no account or purchase required.
4. What if I lose access?
2–3 minute lesson · Fictional practice · New York / U.S. · Reviewed October 26, 2026
What is it?
A wallet password, recovery phrase, and exchange login serve different roles. Recovery depends on the actual wallet design: some use a phrase, while others use different backup or account-recovery systems. Follow official instructions for that exact product. A hardware device does not solve a lost or stolen recovery backup. Never type a real recovery secret into Crown & Ledger, a lesson, a support chat, or a page linked by a stranger.
Why care?
To avoid both accidental loss and giving control to an impostor.
When would I use it?
Before moving meaningful value into self-custody.
Worked example
A fictional phone breaks. The exchange user follows that provider's official identity-recovery process. The self-custody user follows the wallet's verified recovery method. Neither should pay an unsolicited 'support agent' or share a secret.
How to practice
Privately identify recovery requirements and a protected backup plan; review the manufacturer's practice process before funding. Do not experiment with a funded wallet.
The result to aim for
You understand who can help and what responsibility remains yours.
One useful step now: Check your plan while access still works, without exposing secrets.
